MMMM #5: The Overuse of Digital Transformation

Do you believe, like Justin, that the phrase "digital transformation" is overused (especially "transformation")? Justin prefers "evolution"; in this video, he explores the 4 steps of a digital evolution.

Hey everybody. Good morning. Today is the fifth Monday of 2018, and this is the Monday Morning Mobile Minute. Got a little different background today. Today what I want to talk about is digital transformation and probably the overuse of the word transformation. We keep talking about transforming, which really conjures up images of being able to turn on a dime and just change instantly over night, and the reality is that's not really what happens. It's really more of an evolution. So that the way I look at this is that there's really four steps to this.

The first is that we need to think about what is it that we're trying to accomplish with a digital evolution? So we need to establish what our goals and objectives are. The second step of that is that we need to figure out where we're at today. We need to do an assessment to think what is our digital maturity, what are we capable of today? Third thing is we need to put a plan together. We've now set our objectives, we know where we're at, now we know where we need to go, and we need to start putting that plan in place to figure out what that's going to take. What people, processes and technology do we have in place to fulfill those objectives? And then the fourth, and maybe the most important thing we need to do, is we just need to get started. We just need to pick one of these things, one of these ideas and we need to go get started and start to evolve on that.

I don't mean to make it sound like it's overly simple, but it also shouldn't be overly complicated, right? The key here is to get started, break this down into chunks that we can manage, and go get started.

So that's the Monday Morning Mobile Minute. Thanks for taking the time, and have a great week.
