MMMM #32: The Convergence of IT & OT

In the 32nd Monday Morning Mobile Minute of 2018, Justin talks about how connectivity, miniaturization, and other tech advancements are bringing operational technology and information technology together. It's a positive step, although not without (solvable) challenges.

Your candid opinions are appreciated. If you have feedback, drop us a line at marketing@venadotech.com

Video transcript:

Hey everybody. In my last video, I talked about the concept of OT, or operational technology. The use of technology in the core operations and infrastructure in a business isn't new. Obviously, technology has been controlling enterprise systems in the physical world for years. There are several things that have changed in recent years. So, for example, connectivity. Devices that once were on a digital island are now connectable to networks.

Since wireless networks are pervasive and radio technology is so affordable, nearly everything can be connected. Another example is miniaturization, so the size of components and the ability to put sensors on everything has drastically increased the potential. The list of these advancements goes on and on, but why does any of this matter?

It matters because it's bringing together two sides of the business in completely new ways. So for example, a ground-penetrating censor with GPS used to function solely as operational technology. It was on a digital island. But what happens when that device has a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi radio that streams data to a smartphone? Where do we start that data? How do we protect it? How do we aggregate the data from many users so that we can analyze it company-wide? Now we've entered the realm of IT and that's where projects experience a bit of friction and that's what we're talking about when we talk about the convergence of OT and IT.

So the good news is that these challenges are solvable, but it does require a new way of thinking and if you'd like to learn more, check out our website. We've got some additional details there. You can even reach out to us directly. We'd love to share what we've learned about how to overcome these challenges and how we might be able to help you and your business as well.
